Valencia Gardens: Public Housing in San Francisco

[UPDATE October 2006: See photos of the new Valencia Gardens in 2006]

The March 5, 2006 edition of the New York Times Sunday Magazine, titled “The Real Estate Issue,” is thick with coverage of our national conversation about real estate. As usual, there are plenty of articles that the interested urbanist will find well worth reading.

One article, “The Suburban Solution,” (“How do you build affordable housing without federal money? Hitch on to a rising real-estate market and let the private sector do it for you.”) got me thinking about Valencia Gardens, a public housing project in San Francisco's Mission District. In 2004, it was razed and construction began on a redeveloped Valencia Gardens. I'll photograph that soon, but in the meantime, here are some photos shot during its razing in January 2004.

Been on the east coast for 8 years, went home a few months ago and saw that Valencia Gardens was torn down. New buildings look a bit strange compared to what was there before. I lived there when I was a kid.
