Jane Jacobs, famed New York urbanist, dies
Jane Jacobs, who gained fame for her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, died today in Toronto, where she had lived since the late 1960s.
On the NPR story which I just heard, they interviewed Robert Caro, who wrote The Power Broker, a biography of Robert Moses — all of which reminded me of what I wrote about Robert Moses when I was a writer working in New York City for The Berkeley Guides.
Here's the book I worked on, titled Berkeley Guides: New York City '97 : On the Loose, On the Cheap, Off the Beaten Path. You can buy it on Amazon for less than 50¢.

2001: a space odyssey ~ living and seeing in the digital epoch
The first digital photograph I took was in 2001, of this moonrise over the Oakland Hills as seen from San Francisco:
History will remember the early 21st century as the time when many people's lives became “digitized.”

Ikea's Vika Inge legs by Olle Lundberg: aluminum is the metal of modernism?
I was wasting time (precious time) over at Apartment Therapy when I came across their posting about Ikea's Vika Inge table legs.
I like the same legs paired with Ikea's Vika Lauri table top at 46“ x 30”. The legs attach with one allen bolt; everything is stock Ikea. Plenty solid, and a perfect match for Apple Computer's aluminum product
designs
.
This close-up reveals the cheap metal casting that left a big seam on the inside of the leg. The outside of the leg is clean, though; and the table top's aluminum edge is perfectly smooth.

What will you tell your kids you drove?
Temperatures are rising. The polar ice caps are melting. Global warming is happening now. What will you tell your kids you drove?
See the News.com story and watch the video. Chevrolet created a contest to let users make their own ad for the gas-guzzling Chevy Tahoe SUV.
